How to choose the right cabinet
Calculate the U height
Add space for patch panels, cable organisers, shelves, PDUs and fan units to the total U of your devices. Leaving 20–30% free space for future equipment is good practice.
Allow for device depth
Add space for power cables and plugs at the rear to the depth of the deepest device. A 1000 mm depth is generally preferred for rack servers and storage systems.
Consider cable density
19" devices fit a 600 mm cabinet. For dense cabling, an 800 mm width leaves room at the sides for vertical cable trays and organisers.
Plan for load and ventilation
The total weight must stay below the cabinet's static load capacity. As heat load rises, use fan units, perforated doors or a cooling system. Cooling systems →
