Technical information and frequently asked questions
The key dimensions, protection classes, product codes and answers to the most common questions you need when choosing and installing a rack cabinet, all on one page.
Rack cabinet dimensions you should know
A few basic concepts are all you need to choose the right cabinet.
U height
Rack cabinet and device heights are measured in “U”. 1U equals 44.45 mm (1.75 in); a 42U cabinet has 42 mounting positions of 1U each.
The 19-inch standard
The front panel of 19" rack devices is 482.6 mm wide. The mounting rails of Racksis® cabinets are positioned to this dimension in line with IEC 60297-1.
Depth
Cabinet depth must cover the deepest device plus cable space at the rear. Our products range from 290 mm in Open Frame to 1000 mm in the Server and Network series.
Width
19" devices fit a 600 mm wide cabinet. An 800 mm width leaves room at the sides for vertical cable organisers and cable trays.
Static load
The total equipment weight the cabinet can carry. Across our series it ranges from 20 kg in Slim to 1000 kg in Active.
Protection class
The IP code shows the cabinet's level of protection against solid objects and water. Indoor cabinets are IP20; outdoor cabinets are IP54 or IP66.
What do IP20, IP54 and IP66 mean?
The first digit of the IP code shows protection against solid objects and dust, the second against water (IEC 60529).
- 2
- Protected against solid objects larger than 12.5 mm (e.g. fingers)
- 0
- No protection against water
- 5
- Dust protected; dust ingress does not interfere with operation
- 4
- Protected against splashing water from any direction
- 6
- Dust-tight
- 6
- Protected against powerful water jets

Frequently asked questions
Product selection
How do I choose the right cabinet for my project?
Installation location, required U height, depth of the deepest device, cable density and total equipment weight are the five criteria that define the choice.
The Cabinet Selector uses these criteria to suggest matching models from our catalogue, together with their product codes.
What is the difference between wall mount and floor standing cabinets?
Our wall mount cabinets are produced from 4U to 20U (3U+2U and 5U+3U in the Slim series) for floor distribution, offices, retail and CCTV, where there are only a few devices.
Floor standing cabinets are produced from 16U to 47U and are designed for server rooms, data centres and dense network infrastructure.
Which series do you recommend for servers?
The Server Series is designed for server and storage systems: 800 × 1000 mm, 80% perforated doors (single wing at the front, double wing at the rear), 8 omega carriers in 2 mm galvanised steel and M16 levelling feet.
For very heavy equipment, the Active Series offers a static load capacity of 1000 kg.
When should I choose an Open Frame rack?
Open Frame racks are for multicore cabling systems that need no doors or panels. With no doors or panels, natural ventilation is at its maximum, and the flat-pack design lowers transport and storage costs.
They are produced from 26U to 47U, in single frame depths of 290 and 370 mm and double frame depths of 550, 750 and 950 mm.
Which cabinet should I choose for outdoor use?
Our outdoor cabinets come in three mounting types: on the ground (16U–26U), on a wall (7U–12U) and on a pole (12U–20U).
All are produced in IP54 or IP66, with a galvanised steel body and outdoor polyester paint. Double hull models have 10 mm glass fibre insulation that better protects equipment from ambient temperature and humidity.
Which cabinet suits a small or home office?
The Soho Series is designed for small network and CCTV applications, with heights of 4U–12U, depths of 400 and 560 mm, a lockable glass front door and 2 fan slots.
For tight spaces where appearance matters, see the slim Slim Series.
Technical details
How many millimetres is 1U?
1U = 44.45 mm (1.75 in). Cabinet height is given in U; a 42U cabinet, for example, has 42 positions of 1U.
The cabinet's external height is greater than the U total because of the plinth, feet and top cover. You can find the external height of every model in the dimension table on its series page.
What does the 19-inch standard mean?
The front panel of 19" rack mount devices is 482.6 mm wide, and cabinet mounting rails are positioned to this dimension.
Racksis® products are designed in line with IEC 60297-1 (19" rack dimensions) and IEC 60917 (modular order).
What is the load capacity of your cabinets?
Static load capacities of our series:
- Slim 20 kg · Soho 40 kg · Silver 80 kg · Hyper 150 kg
- Eco Standing 100 kg · Open Frame 100 kg
- Network 800 kg · Active 1000 kg
- Outdoor standing 150 kg · Outdoor wall and pole 100 kg
Please ask us about the load capacity of the Server series.
What is the difference between IP20, IP54 and IP66?
IP20 protects against finger-sized objects but offers no protection against water; our indoor cabinets are in this class. IP54 protects against dust and splashing water, and IP66 is dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets.
IP54 versions of our outdoor cabinets use an O-ring lock, IP66 versions a 3-point espagnolette lock. IP protection classes
What perforated door options are available?
A 63% perforated metal door option is available in the Silver, Hyper, Eco Standing, Network and Active series. In the Server series, 80% perforated doors are standard: single wing at the front and double wing at the rear.
Can the door opening direction be changed?
The door opening direction can be changed in the Soho, Eco Standing and Server series. For other series, please ask us.
Which colours are available?
The standard colour of the Silver, Eco Standing, Network, Active and Server series is RAL 9005 black. Slim and Soho are RAL 7035 light grey; Hyper and Open Frame are produced in both RAL 9005 and RAL 7035. Outdoor cabinets have RAL 7035 outdoor polyester paint.
Please ask us about other colours.
Do the cabinets have an earthing connection?
An earthing connection from cabinet to front door is standard in the Silver, Hyper and Eco Standing series. Earthing bars are available as accessories for earthing inside the cabinet.
Installation and ventilation
How is the cabinet ventilated?
- Soho, Silver and Eco Standing: 2 fan slots on top
- Network and Active: 4-fan unit slot as standard; 6-fan units can also be used
- Server: vented top cover for a 6-fan unit and 80% perforated doors
- Outdoor: 2-fan unit slot in the roof and filtered extra fan slots on the sides
For projects with a high heat load, see our cooling systems.
Can a wall mount cabinet stand on the floor?
Yes. Silver sizes of 9U and above, and Hyper sizes of 12U, 16U and 20U, can be used on the floor with optional levelling feet or a castor set.
Conversely, the floor standing Eco Standing cabinet can also be mounted on a wall with 4 brackets.
How do cables enter the cabinet?
The Soho, Silver, Hyper and Eco Standing series have knock-out cable entry plates in the top, bottom and rear covers; the Slim series has them at the top and sides. The Network, Active and Server series have a 220 × 178 mm sliding cable entry in the bottom sheet, with brushed entry options.
In outdoor cabinets, a fully gasketed flange plate keeps the protection class intact at the cable entry.
Can I fix the cabinet to the floor?
The base of the Active series is pre-drilled for floor fixing. Open Frame comes with 2 × 3 mm L plates for floor fixing. M10 levelling feet are standard on Eco Standing, M16 on Active and Server.
For extra protection against tipping, an anti-tilt block can be used.
Why use blanking panels?
Blanking panels close empty U positions in the cabinet. This stops hot air from devices returning to the front, directs cool air through the devices and keeps the front of the cabinet tidy.
